A busy day at the farm

Today I woke up early. I did yoga and then went to the milking parlour. I was explained how everything works and did some cows myself. Although it is busy, it is also quite a relaxing atmosphere. Cows are such calm animals. But they are strong and strong willed. I experienced it when we took them back out to the field. They were to go into a new section of pasture, but refused to walk past the gate where they had been before. It took a lot of coaxing, pushing, pulling and nipping into the ankles by the dogs to get them into the new field. Once they had discovered the clover and other herbs, they were happy. I told cousin about my assignment and if I can ask him some questions, he was happy to explain to me about their farm. He asked me if I can drive a tractor. I have actually never driven one, but thought it would be easy enough. He showed me a simple model. The modern ones are full of computer technology. After a few false starts and near misses I was familiar with the dimensions and the power of the motor and was able to help cousin move the water tank for the cows and a fence. Even the kids helped with the fence. I wondered how he does it by himself, he says it just takes longer. They cannot afford staff, just for the big jobs. Even Trude sometimes helps out with feeding and milking. She often washes the milking parlour.

They have a rare breed of cows which produce a milk high in cream and they sell it to be turned into cream and butter. In summer Trude makes her own butter. It used to be a more mixed farm, but in the 70's they decided to go dairy only. Like in every country, there are farms which are like a factory, and some family businesses which need to specialise to be able to survive. But they say without the income of the holiday cottage they would not be able to keep going. Sad. They also own woodland which needs managing and keeps cousin busy in winter.

The children showed me their den which they built at Easter. It is a very sturdy construction, but they want me to help with the roof. I am taller and can reach. I am the first adult they have allowed to come. What an honour!

Tonight I played with the dogs, all of them. That's 3. They are not used to being played with for so long, and the two older ones lost interest. Dog was eager and and we had a good tumble.

I will sleep well tonight!
